Frequently Asked Questions When does the next session start? Magnificent Belly Dance doesn’t have sessions of classes. Our classes are ongoing. You can join anytime. Each Beginner class includes the same basic moves giving you the opportunity to practice each move each week. New dances are taught in the Routines 2 class on a regular basis.
Can I watch a class before I decide if I want to sign up for belly dance classes? Most women in the Beginner classes are self conscious and worried that their bodies won’t ‘work’. So we don’t allow spectators. However, you are welcome to pay the per class fee of $15 and participate in that one class with no further obligation.
Is there a minimum age for taking the class? The answer is No with the stipulation that the young lady can pay attention in class and not be disruptive.
I’ve never danced before. Will I be able to learn belly dance?Yes. Each of us progresses at her own pace at MBD. Some of us are stiffer than others, or have a bad knee, or have never used our muscles in such a way, but you can learn the moves. You learn the basic moves first, practicing them each week, then move on when YOU are ready.
Is there an audition, recital or skills test to move on to the next level? No. There is no ‘graduation’. You progress at your own pace. When you know the basic moves you may move on to Routines 1. When you learn the easier dances and additional moves, you move on to Routines 2.
When may I join the dance troupe? Do I have to be in the dance troupe if I am in the Routines 2 class? You may join the dance troupe, the Suburban Gypsies whenever you learn a dance or two or six. There is no additional fee to be a Suburban Gypsy, but you are responsible for your own costume pieces. You are welcome to NOT join the dance troupe, there is no pressure to do so, just encouragement.
I’ve been dancing along with DVDs and television. Can I skip the Beginner class?Yes you can. I would suggest that you come to one Beginner class to note any different terminology.
Do I register before class? You can register and make payment at your first class. MBD accepts cash and checks.
Can I attend both Beginner classes each week?Yes, you may attend either or both Beginner classes. The monthly fee for one class per week is $50, for two classes per week $70. For months with 5 Tuesdays (or Thursdays). Do I pay extra for the 5th class? No. For those paying for the month, that 5th class is a bonus.
What do I wear to class?Wear clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement- perhaps leggings or yoga pants with a tank top. Baggy clothing makes it difficult to see the individual movements (isolations). What additional fees are there besides the class fees? There are no additional fees- no registration fee, no membership fee. You only pay for the classes.
Can I pay with a credit or debit card? No. we don’t have the ability to process credit cards at this time. MBD accepts cash and checks.
Do I have to commit to a month of classes? No, you may pay per class if you wish. This is a good option for those who have an unpredictable work schedule.
If I pay for a month of classes and miss class, can the missed class be made up the next month? No. If you miss a class you must take a make-up class in that month or forfeit the class. You may attend any class- Beginner, Routines 1, or Routines 2 as your make-up. There are no refunds of class fees.
